Application Design Best Practices for Android Based Tablets

Application Design Best Practices for Android Based Tablets :

Designing applications for Tablets involves special considerations, though there are similarities to a phone application design. Some of the best practices in designing apps for Android based tablets are:-

User Interface Design: Tablet screens have lot more screen space available allowing user interface to show more information, while maintaining the visual appeal and simplicity of the handheld device. The Honeycomb Action Bar for Android based tablet applications is a Multi-Purpose bar which provides features that include navigation, overflow menu options and the major advantage of providing consistency in versions between phone and tablet applications.
The Manifest file Modifications: The Android Manifest file contains all the essential information of the application for the code to run in the Android System. This manifest file should be updated to explicitly list features the application would support and those supported by the tablet.
SQLite Databases: SQLite is a lightweight transactional database engine that occupies small amount of disk storage and memory, so its a perfect choice for creating databases on many mobile operating systems.  Android provides full support for SQLite databases. Any database created will be accessible by name to any class in the application, but not outside the app.  Data type integrity is not maintained in SQLite i.e. a value of a certain data type can be fed in a column of another data type (put string in an integer and vice versa). Referential integrity is not maintained in SQLite, there is no FOREIGN KEY constraints or JOIN statements. SQLite Full Unicode support is optional and not installed by default.
Controlled Application Package Size: The end product is delivered in the form of a package file. This file is termed as Android Package File (APK), which when installed in the tablet will initiate the application. The permitted package size in the Android market for the final Android Application Package (APK) file is 50 MB. When applications exceed this permitted limit, issues arise. A preferred solution for this is to provide a minimal set of resources to launch the application and then download the rest of the image graphics specific to the device from an application server. This method allows images to be updated and add new target devices without updating the application, faster initial download and installation on all devices.

The Wide World of Tablets - Windows Based Tablets Arrive

The Wide World of Tablets - Windows Based Tablets Arrive: windows based tablet pc

For early adopters the sky is the limit in terms of getting a high quality windows based tablet, because there is a plethora of options. However, before you invest any money into a new apparatus, make sure that you look at the best deals, and assess the over needs that you have for the piece of technology.

The first thing to do in regards to looking for your next piece of technology is to throw away the loyalty to any brand. This might seem odd for some, but remember, your favorite brand might not be coming out of the gate with the best option. This is especially true with new technologies as some brands do not have the savvy or the complete blue prints to make something great yet. This is not to say that there aren't some good quality options from your favorite brand, but in regards to the larger world of computing, brands aren't necessarily the thing to go for. Brand loyalty can get you in trouble sometimes, and it has never been truer than modern times.

The second thing to look out for when trying to find a windows based tablet is price. Do not assume that a higher price tag means that the quality of the device is much better. It's very important to understand that with any computer, there are going to be different levels of pricing, and choosing a costly option will not promise the best features, or even technology. Be careful, there are many high priced options, especially from big name manufacturers that are banking on brand loyalty rather than quality device construction. If you fall for a high priced item, you might regret it, once someone you know has a different model and it's far superior.

Assess your overall needs, and do not simply by the thinnest and sleekest model. Some of the smaller models have a small screen and limited capacity. The larger options can hold more information, but remember, they could tend to be heavier and bulkier, making traveling with them a little hard. If you're on public transportation on a daily basis, you might not want to invest in a larger windows based tablet, as it might be too much to handle when standing room only becomes the traveling option of choice.

The above tips are just a handful of things to consider before purchasing this latest and greatest gadget. Technology moves quite fast, and banking on the latest things can sometimes get technophiles in trouble. If there are any doubts, make sure to explore different options and never spend too much money on a device that will be obsolete in a short amount of time. Always shop around, assess your needs, and make sure the device meets all your overall needs.

Microsoft Plans To Announce Windows Based Tablet: used tablet pc

Hold the presses and don't print anything till October 11th. Microsoft may yet have some newsworthy information on an event that has been planned on the said date. Even though the main subject of the event is going to be the launch of the Windows phone 7 (the successor to the windows mobile), there has also been a healthy amount of speculation going around to suggest that might be quite another surprise brewing and it is believed Microsoft is about to announce a Windows based tablet!

Tablet PCs has been one of the Microsoft networks greatest shortcomings and one that has been a subject of great criticism. Having already come through in the mobile and portable media players market relatively successful with their Windows mobile operating systems and Zune respectively it had been expected that they would also quickly find a way to match up to Apple's widely successful iPad but there has yet been any response so far.

But the scheduled event might just set in spin the wheel that will deliver to the world their first windows based tablets. It would be quite an opportune moment for such an announcement with the technological world being in a kind of simmering state as it awaits the next big thing. Another reason why the industry would be so eagerly awaiting such news is due to the failure of the current windows based tablets to match up to the apples iPad which has just proven too good selling approximately 4.5 million units every quarter.

Why it is widely believed that a windows base tablet produced by Microsoft is much more likely to fair better is the fact that the billion dollar corporation is not likely to be short on the technological know how to pull off what could well cast the I-pad straight into oblivion and a tablet that has also been produced by Microsoft based on their own operating system is more likely to provide access to technological and software support which will be quite necessary for users just starting to use tablet PCs or any other person who may need help.

All in all, there is little else enthusiasts can do except wait for the big day to come around and hope and hope and then hope some more that when Microsoft's CEO, Steve Ballmer, takes the stage on Monday he'll be having a tablet full of surprises hidden somewhere close by.

Dr. Bugallo received a grant from Hewlett Packard (HP) of 21 tablet PCs and audiovisual equipment that she uses in her classroom. Students use these computers to take notes which include illustrations and graphs, and to do programming and simulations. Matlab is used for simulations, Word, OneNote and Journal are used for note taking. In addition, students use the laptops to gather data in the field during research projects. The Tablet PC enables Monica to use math simulation software for live exercises in the classroom. Monica finds that students at all levels (high school, under grad and grad) adapt quickly to using the computers and that her classes have been transformed from a purely theoretical approach to applied problem solving. Dr. Bugallos students use Wikis to keep a log of activities, pose questions to her on the content and reflect on their learning. The advantage of online Wikis over a paper-based approach is that it enables students to share knowledge among them and review each others work. They are also more motivated as they often show their work to friends and family.
