Although it's a resistive touch screen, it is the most reactive and best looking resistive touch screen that I have seen thus far. With there now being five (oh yes, five!) Archos Android Internet Tablets on the market, it's understandably hard to keep 'em all straight, but in our minds the 32 is easy to separate from the rest -- it, along with the 28, is more of an Android PMP than anything else. With 3.2 inches of resistive touchscreen, the 32 packs the specs of a typical media player: 8GB of storage, media player software with support for loads of audio and video formats, and a VGA camera. But unlike most, it runs Android 2.1 (2.2 will be a firmware update, we're told), which adds quite a bit more functionality in terms of applications and web browsing. And it's also got an accelerometer for playing games. At 0, it seems like a pretty good deal, especially when you consider that it's cheaper than an iPod Touch or even a Zune HD (depending on where you're shopping), but there are a few issues that may hold you back from forking over the cash. Read me: I decided to try out something new, so this is my first step into the Android-world. Archos claimed it to be the cheapest Android-device, so i just checked it out and got one off eBay for 35€. It runs on Android 2.2 "Froyo" and has an ARM Cortex A8 processor @ 800 MHz (usually it runs on 600 or 300 MHz to save power). It has 4 GB of storage, however, it is mounted as "sdcard" so you only have about 200 MB system memory to install Apps (or get App2SD). But it also has some drawbacks: the touch screen responsiveness is not very good sometimes. As you can see in my demonstration of "TouchTest", it sometimes recognizes keypresses where you have not pressed. This is very annoying if you try to enter something with the onscreen-keyboard. Moreover, the entire operating system is very sluggish most of the time. Sometimes, it takes 15 seconds to rotate the screen which is way too long. The web browser also takes ages sometimes to load web pages. And, as you can see in the video, the picture viewer has a wonderful design but tends to crash or just doesn´t load the pictures. There are snappier devices out there, that´s for sure! Or maybe they can fix that with an update. Conclusion: Cheap Android-device which can easily be use as an iPod touch-alternative (excellent music app!) but lacks of touchscreen responsiveness and - sometimes, at least - lacks of CPU power. Other applications include email, contacts, web browser, Droid In, Twidroid, Ebuddy IM, Dailymotion, Quickpedia, calculator, alarm clock etc. With a flash memory of 8 to 32 GB, for those requiring additional storage there is also the option of 160 or 500 GB hard drive. The device comes priced at $ 250 for an 8GB version and $ 500 for a 500GB Archos 5 tablet PC. Powered by an ARM Cortex A8 processor @ 800 MHz, it can be compared to the 600 MHz processor found in iPhone 3GS.

The main difference between the iPad and the Archos 5 is that while the former has a LED screen with 1024x768 pixels display, the Archos 5 has a non-LED display with a screen resolution of 800x400 pixels only. But with its Android OS, the video quality of the Archos 5 is quite good. Using a 'resistive touch technology' the Archos 5 lacks on two aspects. Firstly, the tactile sensation is not that good with the finger sticking and causing a smudge. A sliding movement across the screen also requires greater pressure.

Secondly, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet does not support multi touch. On the other hand the iPad has a multi-touch screen with far better resolution, effects and amazing clarity. With a 9.7" display while the iPad does not exactly fit into a pocket, with a 5" display the Archos 5 technically does fit in a pocket. Again, the biggest drawback for the Archos 5 is that it offers no Mac support.
