It's still years out before the iPad is completely overtaken by an Android tablet. Really, there aren't any guarantees it will ever happen, but the increase in competition can only be good news for tablet consumers. As Apple continues to enhance and polish its iPad product line, Android tablet manufacturers will need to similarly improve their own devices in order to keep up in quality. There are already rumors of Amazon having an updated Kindle Fire in the works with a higher price tag to compete more closely with the more expensive iPad models. The tablet market is becoming a more open race, and consumers should feel excited about what the future will bring.

It is still portable.Obviously you can easily carry it in one hand, purse or book bag. I like that aspect because Amazon is still showing consideration to the consumer and of course practicality.

Apple's iPad Outsells HP's PCs in Q1 2012

It's no surprise that Apple is one of the top PC and technology makers in the world. What may be surprising is the fact that Apple has surpassed HP in computer unit sales and revenues for the first time ever, making the Cupertino giant the number one company. Apple can attribute a lot of this success to record sales of iPads and, instead of losing sales to low priced tablets, Apple said that it would continue to "innovate like crazy" in the tablet market.

The company reported quarterly sales of 15.4 million iPads and 5.2 million Macs, which gave Apple more than 20 million sales of dedicated computing devices. It was reported that HP's sales for the fourth quarter of 2011 were close to 14.7 million, with Lenovo and Dell selling 12.9 million and 11.6 million units, respectively. In addition to that, Apple's figures were twice that of those reported by Microsoft for the same quarter.

Tim Cook, the new CEO of Apple, was asked about the impact of lower-priced tablets in the market, like Amazon's Kindle Fire. Cook replied that he was happy with the iPad's sales and pointed out that sell-through had exceeded sell-in, which left the company with strained inventory levels around the world, contradicting the rumors that the Kindle Fire had dampened potential iPad sales. Cook also stated that Apple sees the iPad as a "huge opportunity for Apple over time" and that "there will come a day when the tablet market in units is larger than the PC market."

Tablets are indeed doing very well with almost every name in the tech world offering their own version of the iPad which pioneered the market. However, I don't think that tablets will ever fully replace computers or laptops. Physical keyboards and mouse controls are too ingrained in people and are also extremely necessary for a lot of computing tasks. Sure you can make keyboard docks and mouse attachments, but what's the point?

Cook also pointed out that the rapid growth of iPad sales was eating up the growth of generic PC sales but not hurting the Apple's own Mac sales. It seems that all of Apple's mobile tech gadgets draw in customers for the company's netbooks and desktop computers. Sales of both have been up, and over 1/5 of all Apple Mac sales were through the company's own retail stores.

ing ARM processors (a marked departure from Windows usual reliance on x86-based chips) could have a hard time matching up against the iPad and Kindle Fire price-wise. That s because Microsoft is supposedly charging vendors $ 90 to $ 100 for Windows 8, which would balloon the cost of materials enough to make it difficult for tablet makers to turn a profit. According to TabTimes, that amount is signif

icantly higher than the $ 50 Microsoft charges manufacturers for PC versions of Windows. Apple and Amazon can keep costs low because they either manage the supply chain ruthlessly (Apple) or can sell content to users post-purchase. Windows tablet makers won t have either of those advantages. Furthermore, Windows 8 slates using ARM processors won t be able to use existing x86 applications, which limits one of Microsoft s main selling points for tablets running the new OS backward compatibility with all those Windows programs you already have. (There will be a version of Microsoft Office included for ARM tablets, at least.) Market research firm IHS is estimating that the average selling price for an ARM-based Windows 8 tablet will be $ 610, which is slightly more than a new 32GB iPad. An 7-inch version would obviously be far cheaper, but could they priced in the same ballpark as the Kindle Fire, especially if Amazon decides to drop the $ 199 price in exchange for running some splash-screen ads? No doubt Microsoft could throw marketing dollars toward the vendors to help defray the slim margins, much as Intel has reportedly been doing to promote the Ultrabook platform. Speaking of Intel, the pricing difficulties for ARM-based Windows 8 tablets could help the chip giant, which is looking to jump into the tablet game with Windows 8 models of its own. Intel could also subsidize manufacturers using its chips to produce Windows 8 tablets. Enterprises may be willing to tolerating paying slightly more for Windows tablets knowing that they will come with a version of Office installed, or in the case of Intel versions, be compatible with existing Windows software (including the security apps their IT departments rely on). But it will be tougher to stoke consumer demand, which is more price sensitive, especially given the iPad s formidable library of apps that are built specifically for it.
