Windows 8 Release Preview on a Tablet PC

tablet pc apps Videos

There's a new build of Windows 8 available called the Windows 8 Release Preview. We thought we'd take a look at how it works on our old HP TouchSmart TM2 tablet PC. Take a look at the video to check it out. Not a whole lot has changed within the primary operating system other than a nicer app launching animation. We still have the customizable live tiles on the start screen, but with the release preview, a lot of the bundled apps have been updated for stability and more features. The Pictures app has added a great new SkyDrive fetch feature. It's similar to what you have in the new web based version of SkyDrive where you can browse through the files on any computer that you have installed the SkyDrive app under your Live ID (if it's turned on). From the Pictures app, you can very easily browse through pictures on your other computers, in addition to the local computer, SkyDrive cloud storage itself, Facebook, and Flickr. You've also got very nicely designed new apps for Bing News, Sports, Finance, and Travel. They all feature large imagery and great looking typography along with horizontal scrolling. One feature I really like in the Travel app is the panorama views. The Music app now supports Zune Pass subscriptions, which is great for unlimited streaming and downloads of any kind of music you want. You've got a "Play to Xbox" button in both the Music and Video apps as well, which still seems a bit buggy with my Xbox. You've also got the Xbox games app where you can see ...

Office 2013 Preview on a Windows 8 Release Preview Tablet PC
Last week a free preview version of Office 2013 was released for Windows 7 and Windows 8 Preview. We decided to install it on our Windows 8 Release Preview release equipped HP TouchSmart TM2 Tablet and take it for a spin. The coolest part of Office 2013 is the new OneNote MX which is a Metro-style version of OneNote that is fully compatible with the new Windows 8 interface. It doesn't have all of the features of the desktop version of OneNote, but it is certainly more feature-rich than the iOS, Android, and Windows Phone versions of OneNote. You can finally view all types of content created in the desktop version of OneNote unlike other mobile versions. You can also rearrange pages and sections and notebooks, but features like extracting text from images, converting handwriting to text, and recording video/audio while taking notes are still missing. For those you'll have to launch the desktop version of OneNote 2013. However, OneNote MX also includes an excellent new interface design where controls appear in a radial menu accessible by a single button. Tapping the button to access the commands is fine and all, but if you already know which direction the command you want is hidden under, then all you have to do is tap and slide the button to activate that command. So for example if you want to undo something, just touch the radial menu button and slide to the left to activate the command without even having to open the menu. It's a very innovative way to access shortcuts ...

Rumors have it that the iPhone 5 release date will be later than previously expected, due to software that otherwise won't be ready.
The news comes from the folks over at AllThingsD, and is at odds with earlier reports that indicated that the device would actually be available earlier, during September. Next generation iPhone rumors are pouring in these days, as we're getting closer to the launch of the device. That conflicts with a report from tech blog Gizmodo, which has passed along a supposed email from an AT&T employee claiming that employee vacation requests for late September have been denied. "Historically the only time they've done this was for an iPhone release," reads that email. "So we're looking at the last two weeks of September." "I don't know why AT&T's calling for all hands on deck those weeks, but it's not for an iPhone launch," one source said.

Apple hasn't commented on when it will release a new iPhone model, or what features it will include. For now, the September -- and now October -- launch reports should be treated as rumors.

The iPhone 5 allegedly entered the final stage of its design phase a couple of months ago, and recently entered production phase. The device will come pre-loaded with iOS 5, and should offer a slew of improvements, such as a vastly improved notifications system, Twitter integration, better Safari and Mail apps, the new iMessage service, iCloud integration, improved multitasking, and better overall responsiveness.
Apple's iPhone 5 will include a curved glass display, perhaps similar to that of the Google Nexus S, according to a new online report.
Apple's iPhone 5 will feature a curved-glass touch-screen display.

"Cover glass makers are reluctant to commit investment to the purchase of glass cutting equipment due to the high capital involved," according to the May 23 report, citing unnamed sources. "Apple reportedly has purchased 200-300 glass cutting machines to be used by glass cutters."

Those machines are supposedly stored at various assembly plants in anticipation of covered-glass production ramping to acceptable levels. Apple is partnering with its suppliers over manufacturing processes such as glass-cutting and lamination.

One of the iPhone's recent rivals, the Google Nexus S, debuted in December 2010 with a screen curved ever-so-slightly inwards. At the time, Google claimed the display "fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and along the side of your face." The Dell Venue Pro, a smartphone running Windows Phone 7, also features a curved display--albeit slightly outwards, perhaps in a bid to broaden its range of visibility.

Other rumors have suggested Apple is prepping an edge-to-edge screen for the next iPhone. Those reports stem from an "iPhone 5G" case offered on Chinese manufacturer Kulcase's Alibaba.com Website.

Nexus 7 UK Pricing & Release Date (£159 8GB & £199 16GB on June 20/27, 2012)

google nexus release date Videos

Google has unveiled that the Nexus 7 tablet will be available for £159 for the 8GB tablet and £199 for 16GB on UK shelves June 27, 2012. Preorders get them on June 20, 2012. We've just had word from ASUS that the 16GB variant of the Nexus 7 will arrive on UK shelves on July 27th -- slightly later than the 8GB model, which will be sold exclusively through Google Play from mid-July. Brits are looking at £159 for the 8GB tablet and £199 for 16GB. The latter is actually shipping to big stores like PC World, Comet, Tesco and eBuyer around July 20th, so those who pre-order may end up signing for that Special Delivery even earlier. Update: the 16GB slate will also be sold through Carphone Warehouse, either for the same price as above or free on a tethered contract (but check those sums before signing up, obviously).
