Technically, it is only a refresh. But which is no method to talk about one of the most advantageous business ultraportable near to the market. owning a powerful mixture of increased performance, extended battery life, and remarkably gentle weight, the X201 maintains its predecessor's stellar reputation. it may be also made tough, relaxing to type on, and secure. At $ 1,514 as configured, this gadget is truly an amazing offer for demanding executives near to the go. We just wish it ran only a little cooler.
Design
Like lots of of its ThinkPad brethren and low-voltage cousin (the X201s), the ThinkPad X201 consists of a conventional all-black body, with durable, lightweight magnesium or carbon fibers utilized while in the lid. The glimpse is sleek but in add-on somewhat plain in comparison toward brushed metal skin color near to the HP EliteBook 2540p as well as the razor-thin Dell Vostro V13 (made of aluminum). although the X201 is not marketed getting a rugged notebook, Lenovo promises that it is made to pass army specification exams for actual shock, thermal shock, altitude, dust, severe temperatures, humidity, and vibration.
The X201s actions 11.6 x 9.2 x 1.4 inches; using the high-capacity nine-cell battery, it weighs just 3.8 pounds, lighter than rivals such as the 4-pound EliteBook 2540p, but slightly even more compared to ThinkPad X201s, which weighs 3.4 pounds using exactly the very same battery. in the celebration you choose the scaled-down six-cell battery, the surplus body fat drops even even more to 3.2 pounds, practically as gentle as most netbooks. However, the EliteBook 2540p consists of an optical drive.
Keyboard and Touchpad
Considering how properly it is designed, is it any shock the fact that ThinkPad X201 has exactly the very same exact keyboard since the X201s, X200, X200s, and X201 tablet? The keys are extremely responsive, however the palm relaxation is truly only a little short for individuals with extended wrists. utilizing the 10 Thumbs Typing test, we experienced been in a placement to acquire a rating of 86 terms every minute, which could be much better than our common 80 wpm rate, but owning a 3-percent error fee that is even worse than our standard 1-percent mark.
Unlike the X200 and X201s, which provide only a TrackPoint for navigation, the X201 arrives with an optional touchpad. We've in any way instances appreciated Lenovo's TrackPoint pointing sticks for the reason which they permit touch typists to proceed near to the desktop without any shifting their arms away belonging toward home row. Also, we such as the simple fact that Lenovo's TrackPoint consists of a convex shape, which produces it much less difficult to create utilization of compared to concave pointing stick on HP EliteBooks.
However, not everyone likes to create utilization of pointing sticks, and all of Lenovo's other ThinkPads have equally a TrackPoint jointly with a touchpad. So it only produces feeling the fact that business would suit a touchpad near to the X201. That said, the touchpad is pretty small at only 2.3 x one inches in size. However, it is extremely precise and facilitates multitouch gestures like pinch-to-zoom.
Security Features
The X201 has many safety qualities which experienced been made to preserve your details besides prying eye balls should really the notebook computer fall away from your control. An optional fingerprint reader allows you to definitely arranged up biometric logins, TPM 1.2 circuitry provides you powerful preboot protection, and an optional encrypted difficult generate (which was current within our evaluation unit) produces particular your details is protected even once the difficult generate is eliminated away from your notebook.
Heat
After we suit the X201 below only a little stress by streaming a 15-minute Hulu movement photo at complete screen, the method obtained warm, using the touchpad reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the keyboard clocking in at 99 degrees, as well as the bottom hitting an unpleasant 106 degrees. The low-voltage X201s ran cooler, owning a 92-degree deck, a 98-degree keyboard, jointly with a 103-degree bottom. However, the HP EliteBook 2540p was drastically warmer owning a bottom that reached a scalding 119 degrees.
Ports
For a method this compact, the X201 has lots of ports. near to the best part is truly a USB port, audio tracks in/out jacks, a modem connector, jointly with a Kensington lock slot. near to the left is truly a VGA port, an Ethernet jack, an ExpressCard/54 slot, and two even more USBs (for a complete of three). The the front lip belonging toward notebook computer consists of a 5-in-1 memory space card reader. regardless of all these connections, we wish the X201 experienced an even more type of display-out option, just like HDMI or DisplayPort.
Though the ThinkPad X201 is accessible with an optional webcam ($ 30), our evaluation gadget do not arrive with one.
