These nifty little devices can be carried around in your pocket without any problems. They are as small as a mobile phone and have the same features, but are also equipped with some extra's that make the difference. Archos mediaplayers have a reduced weight compared to others and are capable to play heaps of audio- and videofiles, including.mkv (1080p Blu-Ray quality). The LG optimus pad comes equipped with a 8.9" 1280x768 screen, so the pixels are dense. And here's the kicker, it can do 3d! Now it isn't completely like the space movies just yet. Users will still need to wear those dodgy glasses and it comes at a heavy price - 900 dollars and not a penny less.

Now, before you get the wrong idea, the Android MID 7" Tablet PC is not an iPad imitation. Instead, it's akin in principle to the Samsung Galaxy, both being tablet PC's running on the Android platform. In this article, let us review the product and see how good (or how bad) it is, when compared to the industry-leading iPad.

Battery Life

Now, the iPad boasts more than eight hours of use without recharging, while the Android MID 7" lasts for less than four. What's more, there have been reports that many units have issues with charging, as the batteries are often defective. Thus, make sure that you are buying from a reputable seller in order to avoid getting a mobile device that is far from mobile.

On-screen Keyboard Sensitivity

One thing I noticed right away is that the on-screen keyboard is not as responsive as I wanted it to be. It takes almost half a second for a character to appear on screen, which translates to at least 2 minutes to write a single tweet. I guess I cannot expect much from a USD 100 device, but I can't help to want for more.

Connectivity

External Keyboard and Pouch

The Android MID 7" Tablet PC has optional accessories, so I decided to get an external keyboard that's installed on a carrying case. One thing I noticed is that the external keyboard has a USB connector, while the tablet PC does not. Because of this, you will still need to use an adapter (comes with the default package) so that the keyboard will work.

Now, the pouch is actually a misnomer. Why? Because the clamps that will hold the device are spaced too far apart. Because of this, the tablet can fall off of the carrying case at any given time, which defeats the purpose of the accessory in the first place.

So what's good about it?

The Price

At less than 100 USD, buying the Android MID 7" Tablet PC should be painless to most people. It can serve as a good training ground for Android OS novices. Why? Because given its price, even if you break it, you won't feel that bad.

This is a lot less expensive than the original iPhones, and apparently Apple is now competing quite well with the other smart phones which are trying to imitate its revolutionary technologies.

Prior to this he said he took his laptop or notebook around with him so he could run his business. He was considering buying a tablet, but he said; "with all the new business apps that I've owned," it was not until now that he can run his business just fine all from a small device like this. He also explained it had security enhancements to protect his e-mail messages and attachments. And he was able to integrate his phone with his Microsoft exchange business e-mail files, and he had corresponding folders that were also on his laptop which he can pull up from his iPhone.

Apparently, he does not feel at all as if he is encumbered with such a small device. I related to him the fact that I owned one of the first transportable cellular phones back in the day. And even though it cost me $ 1000 per month to pay for the minutes I used, I too was able to run most of my business from that phone. And back then we didn't have computers, and fax machines had just been invented. It is amazing how do technology devices free up a small business person so they can do mobile computing on the go.

Just then, he received an e-mail, confirmed an order, called his manager, and sent a text message back to the customer. Basically he did that in about 2 min., and we continue our conversation. This just goes to show you that you don't need a laptop, a notebook, or even a tablet computer to participate in the new mobile world of business.

The reason I mention this, is I got an advertisement in the mail from AT&T with about the same offer that he was explaining to me, along with all the options, and an explanation of all the business apps which were readily now available. It makes sense. Indeed I hope you will please consider this.

SQLite Databases: SQLite is a lightweight transactional database engine that occupies small amount of disk storage and memory, so its a perfect choice for creating databases on many mobile operating systems.  Android provides full support for SQLite databases. Any database created will be accessible by name to any class in the application, but not outside the app.  Data type integrity is not maintained in SQLite i.e. a value of a certain data type can be fed in a column of another data type (put string in an integer and vice versa). Referential integrity is not maintained in SQLite, there is no FOREIGN KEY constraints or JOIN statements. SQLite Full Unicode support is optional and not installed by default.
Controlled Application Package Size: The end product is delivered in the form of a package file. This file is termed as Android Package File (APK), which when installed in the tablet will initiate the application. The permitted package size in the Android market for the final Android Application Package (APK) file is 50 MB. When applications exceed this permitted limit, issues arise. A preferred solution for this is to provide a minimal set of resources to launch the application and then download the rest of the image graphics specific to the device from an application server. This method allows images to be updated and add new target devices without updating the application, faster initial download and installation on all devices.

Hardware and Looks
The Acer Iconia Tab A500 has a 10.1 inch touchscreen that offers 1280x800-pixel resolution.

On the front you will also see a 2 megapixel camera for video calling. However, on the front you won't find any physical buttons.

The normal home and back buttons of any Android device are replaced by virtual buttons on screen. You can see the buttons in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.

The advantage of this placement is that if you shuffle between portrait and landscape orientations, the buttons are always on the lower left-hand side of the display.

There's another button at the lower left corner which gives access to all recently used apps.

On the back of the tablet you will see a 5 megapixel camera. The built quality of A500 gives a cheap feeling because they have mainly used plastic.

There is an orientation lock key and volume adjustment key on the top edge of the tablet. The device also features a Micro SD card slot, a SIM card slot, micro-USB port and micro-HDMI port.

On top of A500 is a headphone socket. The tablet is 13.3mm thick and weighs 765g. That means its 164g heavier than the iPad 2. The A500 runs on the Tegra 2 processor and has 1GB of RAM.

Display and Camera
The 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 TFT LCD of A500 is a visual delight. Another plus point of the display is its viewing angle.

You can position the tablet at any angle and still the readability remains very good. Though the readability reduces significantly under sun, it performs pretty well indoor conditions.

The 5 mega-pixel rear camera takes nice photos under a bright sky and front camera is just ok. But the main problem is that cameras lose the focus if you try to capture anything away from it and produces blurry images. Despite the 720p HD video capturing capability, the captured video quality is not good at all.

Software and Performance
Acer's Iconia Tab A500 runs on Android 3.0, a specially customized OS for the tablets and it certainly works like a breeze.

A500 features a great browser with Flash support. You can open multiple tabs and multi-task. The Honeycomb on screen keyboard is a delight. It supports multi-touch, so you can touch type.

You can also hold down the shift key or number key to get quick access to certain characters. The Gmail client, music player, calendar, photo browser, chat and maps application works brilliantly.

The apps in the Android Market for the Honeycomb devices are not so many and Google should look into this matter as the common Android apps can not utilize the screen space of the tablets. The tablet runs on pair of 3260mAh batteries and offers almost 7 hours of battery life.

Final Verdict
The overall performance of Iconia Tab A500 is good. But there are some negative points too. It's a very heavy tablet, battery life is little poor, and compared to some tablets its price is bit high.

While ASUS Eee Pad Transformer is priced at $ 400 with almost the same facilities, A500 is priced at $ 450.
