The Tablet Winds Are Changing For Everyone, Including Apple And Microsoft

Tablets are the way of the future... right? Well that would be the case if you asked just about anyone who uses them. Some experts would say otherwise unfortunately. Tablets have come a long way since Apple came along and introduced the iPad back in 2010. Ever since that point, an entirely new category was opened up for other tech companies to come along and develop new products in. Over time that have been a few changes though. Certain companies can only stay on top for so long. We've known that Microsoft was the top dog tech company for years and years. The PC was good to go but again, times have changed. PC's aren't as sought after as they used to be. The tablet sales are also going downhill a little bit, even for Apple. So Microsoft and Apple have something to worry about now... don't they?

Well, yes and no.

Microsoft
Microsoft hasn't had the best luck lately. With the recent deal between IBM and Apple, the funeral for PC's has been set. Think about this. Just with the way that technology has gone more mobile, the days of stationary computing are gone. That's just the facts. Microsoft recently killed off it's attempts at a mini tablet with the death of the Surface Mini. This is a big deal for Microsoft. The small screen tablet market has been filled up with other companies' products, such as Apple's iPad Mini or Google's Nexus 7. Since these tablets are already well established on the market, Microsoft wouldn't be making the best investment should they've decided to release it. No one would've taken notice since they're 2 years late and the fact that their operating system's staple office programs don't work very well on small screen tablets.

Apple
Recently there have been reports of Apple's iPad sales going down. This has led experts to think that the iPad is on its way out. They couldn't be more wrong. The way that we deal with tablets is oddly reminiscent of the way that we deal with most other computing technology. Yes, I feel that tablets are basically smartphones without the phone part, but they aren't dealt with in the same manner. What I mean by this is that we deal with our tablets the same way we deal with our laptops and computers. We don't normally replace our laptops or computers every 2 years like we do with our phones. Because of this, this is going to cause a lull in sales over a particular amount of time. Not to mention the fact that people don't just trash their tablets after their done with them. They typically pass them down in order to save money. So the sales have slowed but people are still buying tablets, just not as much as they used to.

What Does This Mean For Both Of These Companies?
Apple doesn't really have much to worry about. Mainly because they are Apple and until another company one ups them, they will always be a fashion statement in terms of the most advanced tech. They will continue to make more tablet iterations of the iPad. I'm sure we can expect to see the iPad Air 2 some time soon. The only thing is that the sales might still fade unless they are in the holiday season to boost sales. Microsoft is a different story. People don't resort to Microsoft for their mobile technology needs like they do for Apple and Samsung. Microsoft has the Surface Pro 3 out and even though it's been getting good reviews, it's still not everyone's first choice. The Windows phones don't seem to be doing well either. Naturally, Microsoft is just a PC company and unless they are able to create something game changing for the mobile technology world, they're going to be out of luck in terms of sales.

The tablet market is going through a change right now, and only the top companies will remain in the game. Apple will be fine until someone knocks them off of their throne, but Microsoft looks to be on the ropes in comparison. Time will only tell how long Microsoft will last, and what will become of the current tablet market and it's future.

Apple's all new 12" MacBook and a higher-res sixth-gen iPad for 2014

Apple has a newly designed 12-inch MacBook featuring a high-resolution display, and a new 9.7-inch sixth-generation iPad with an even higher pixel count than the most current Retina display. Both are to be released next year according to knowledgeable insider Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo, who is an an analyst working for KGI Securities, has said that Apple has a ton of major new products in the works for 2014. The biggest one being the new 12-inch MacBook which will feature what he said is an "ultra-slim clamshell form factor."

He says this new and improved MacBook will bring the best of both worlds from both the portability of the 11-inch MacBook Air and the greater productivity brought by the 13-inch model. The display is said to be up to par with Apple's high-resolution MacBook Pro Retina display.

Kuo says that the newest MacBook being worked on will "redefine laptop computing once again following the milestone created by the MacBook Air."

Despite all the rumors that Apple will probably introduce a notebook powered by its custom A-series chips like the ones found in the iPhone and iPad, Kuo made it clear that he does not expect that the new 12-inch MacBook will run on an A-series chip. Instead, he thinks that the new MacBook will feature a traditional Intel CPU.

He has also revealed that Apple is currently working on a new sixth-generation iPad that will feature a higher pixel-per-inch count than the current 9.7-inch iPad with Retina display. Going against the recent rumors yet again, he doesn't expect Apple to launch a 12-inch iPad next year.

The sixth-generation iPad is expected to launch in late 2014, and will cram in as much as 40 percent more pixels than the current iPad's Retina display.

Inside the Apple supply chain, he is expecting the company Parade Technology to benefit from an large amount of embedded DisplayPort technology in the 2014 lineup. Kuo said eDP, which is a standardized display interface that makes graphics processors interface with display panels, will more than likely play a large role in the company's products next year.

"We think Parade will defend its status as Apple's sole eDP provider going into 2014, making it one of the top stories in the Apple supply chain," Kuo wrote in a research note.

Kuo has quite the track record of accurately revealing Apple's future plans. He was the first person to reveal that Apple would retire its 17-inch MacBook Pro. He also correctly forecast Apple's fall 2012 product lineup in its entirety, and his predictions for Apple's 2013 launch schedule made in January have thus far proven 100 percent correct.

This PC tablet kills the iPad. Apad, best Apad, Apad iRobot, iPad, Google android PC tablet Okay, so do I like the Apad more than the iPad? You bet. While I am a fan of Apple's products the fact is that the iPad is a closed system. Allowing me only to get content from Apple, games only from Apple, installed ONLY if Apple approves the games or apps. I don't like being held back. The Apad gives me that FREEDOM that I have been searching for in a PC Tablet. I get the price, size, and the Power of Google with maps, mail and an Android 2.2 OS. Android Tablets VS iPad

Android Tablets VS iPad :

It is just a battle between iOS and Android which fight has changed tremendously from Smartphones one the market to Tablets. Approach Analytics, a general market trends company, reports which on quarter 4 of 2010, Android Tablets sold on the market has tremendously increased to 22% in the market share. This increase on the market share in Q4 is often a tenfold increase as compared with that of Q3 in the same year.

The Samsung Universe Tablet contributed into the large jump on the market share for the final quarter of recently. Apple iPad distributed around 7. several million iPad products in Q4 regarding 2010. On another hand, Android Tablets accounted for 75% in the shipments made global.

The strong great deals of Android Tablets is seen as continuously emerging despite the fact that Honeycomb or Google android 3. 0 haven't yet been released in the tablet market. Google android 3. 0 is expected to rise as the principle competitor of Apple mackintosh iPad once this can be made available into the public. As that battle continues, Apple iPad is actually scheduled to relieve Apple iPad 2 this holiday season. For now, i want to try to know why customers would rather buy Android Drugs over Apple iPad.

iPad offers amazing graphics, distinct videos, touch tv screen sensitivity, 3G connectivity, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, twelve hours battery living, games and other applications that may be installed in this specific unit. An Google android Tablet, on another hand, has an amenable source for Main system. This means end users can still improve to the applications and coding. You will discover more games in addition to applications developed by using Android Tablet. There are GPS, 3G in addition to allows users to read e-books. This also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth very much alike iPad. Android Tablet carries a camera and adobe flash support while iPad won't have this attribute. You can do multi-tasking simillar to iPad which is relatively cheaper with regard to cost.

As for any disadvantages of the 2 main products, iPad won't have a digital camera and lacks USB port. It does not support flash. Moreover, YouTube, CBS and Huku are reportedly that they are problematic with iPad. No have GPS very. For Android Product, its battery life is not the same as that of a good iPad.

What Apple iPad won't have right right now, it may have in the near future especially with iPad a couple of coming out on the market soon. The same fits Android Tablets. This can be seen as a good unending battle between the 2 main. What these not one but two are undergoing right now is related to how it was before in the cellular phone market. As one as well as two features become basic, additional and much more sophisticated features tend to be incorporated in mobile phones. The Tablet market is no more advanced than this.

The comparison regarding Android tablets in addition to iPad needs someone to have a clear insight in to the various aspects of both the devices. While that Android Tablet is actually fully supported through Google, iPad loves the support regarding Apple Inc. Both company providing same task with the several features and excellent, and all know these two will be the world's best organization, but difficult to view best from together but here you can compare both devices in the user experience, review and behavior in the device. Some in the prime grounds regarding comparison are since follows.

Size in the Device Screen:
The view in the application and finally its utility depends into a great extent to the screen size in the device. The screen size in the iPad is around 10 inches so much that at times it could be compared to that mini laptop. It could be one of the best devices for watching a movie as long as you're traveling. On another hand the Android devices have got a screen size considerably smaller than which of iPad which usually fits your own palm. Finally it really is the portability in addition to utility that influences the marketplace share of which product. The Android phones are more portable and own higher utility component. Finally it depends upon the buyer, whether he/she needs a smallish screen or much larger screen and the purpose of having the system.

Operating System:
Access the Android app market is less of a challenge than that for any Apple app market. This is usually because of the difference in the main system. The version in the software on every Android tablet is not similar. An Android application may are very effective on one Google android tablet but won't work on another. This could mainly be because of the difference in the version and also the updating required. The updating may very well be at times instantaneous and at times take prolonged moment duration.

Applications:
Usually the majority find the Android main system to be simpler and compatible approach iOperating System (iOS) a program of Apple Inc. The comparison among Android Tablets in addition to iPad is incomplete without the mention of programs. The Android programs are much more with regards to the iPad programs. The major reason will be the open system in the Android. The Android for open source loves larger support in the developer's community. More the programs available more tend to be features added on to the device. The user carries a larger range regarding Android applications to choose from. With reference to application the Android Tablet appears to be far ahead regarding iPad.

Costing:
Cost belongs to the factors that have a very big impact to the popularity and great deals of any system. The Android use, having been produced on open system, is much cheaper approach iPod application. The fee for registering for Android application developer is higher than that regarding iPad. Both that devices have data plans. The data plan on any tablet is actually indispensable.

Laptop users and cell Phone users have identified their need for tablets. The tablet market is relatively new which is still unsaturated so users must scrutinize between the 2 main to meet its tablet needs in addition to observe on who'll still lead that race.

Android Tablets vs. iPad

Android Tablets vs. iPad :

Android Tablets vs. iPad - this may well become the big tech debate of 2011. I will break down the differences for you and tell you what side I am on! There are several key differences between the two devices -

Operating System

Obviously, one of the largest differences between the two systems is the operating system. Android tablets are running on some version of the Android OS from Google, while Apple's iPad is running on Apple's iOS. Both are the same basic OS that runs on the companies' respective smart phones.

To me, this is just a matter of preference. These days, many developers prefer Android over iOS, as it is much easier to get a new app into Android's app market. However, every Android tablet (and phone) may run on a different version of the software, which can make it a bit unsettling for users, as some apps may work only on a newer version of Android, which every tablet may not get.

The companies that develop the tablets decide when to push an update of the Android software to each type of device, so one type might get an update, while others may wait for months, or never get an update at all.

As far as I am concerned, there is no clear winner in this arena.

If you get a chance, try each one and see which operating system you like best. Personally, I am a bigger fan of Android.

Screen Size

Having a big screen can be a plus or a minus depending on what you plan to use it for, and especially on how you plan to carry a tablet around. For example, I purchased the Samsung Galaxy Tab, considered one of the best Android tablets currently on the market, and a big selling point for me ws the screen was actually much smaller than the iPad.

The iPad screen is over 10 inches, making almost as big as some small laptops.

That can be great if you plan to carry it in a backpack all the time and want to watch videos on it, but it does make it harder to carry around. For me, the Galaxy Tab made more sense because I don't carry a backpack and like to bring it to meetings.

So, again, no clear winner here. You may want to decide first whether you want a wireless device that is portable or if you want the biggest screen possible. One caveat here, however - soon there will likely be tablets running Android on the market that have screens the size of the iPad.

Apps

You can have a discussion about Android tablets vs. iPad without talking about apps. Apps make or break the tablet in my opinion. Having used both operating systems extensively, I will say that, although the iPad certainly has more apps than Android, I have not been disappointed with Android and can find just about an kind of app I can think of. In addition, almost every company that makes an iPad app makes an Android app as well.

In fact, in my estimation, given that Android sales are now surpassing iPhone, and the fact I mentioned above - that it is easier to develop apps and get in the Android market, I would not be surprised to see Android catch up the Apple in the future when it comes to apps.

Cost

It seems that even the best Android tablets are cheaper overall, and you can find some good, cheap Android tablets out there. Both have data plans, and you can't do much without a data plan on a tablet unless you stay in a wifi zone, so you will likely end up paying about the same there.

However, when it comes to the cost the device itself, Android wins.

This argument will rage on during 2011, but when it comes to Android Tablets vs. the iPad, I am all for Android!

Android Tablets Gain on iPad

Android Tablets Gain on iPad: samsung 101 tablet

Is the iPad invincible? Some seem to think so, but sales records are beginning to show otherwise. There are several Android tablet models that are gaining on the ever-popular iPad. Apple is trying to counter this with the introduction of the iPad 2, but will it work? Only time will tell. Android internet tablets could quite possibly outsell the Apple iPad in coming years, especially since they are priced well below that of the iPad and contain the same or better specs and performance threshold. Are Android internet tablets too good to be true? Android fans don't think so!

Of the most likely competitors, Archos is leading the way with a line of internet tablet with Android devices. The Archos 101 Android tablet is one of the best sellers. Why is this? The Archos 101 does it all and some say it does it even better than the iPad. With a low price, superior performance, and a sleek profile, who can argue?

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is another contender in the race for internet tablet with Android superiority. Previously priced at around $ 600, the Galaxy Tab is now available for around $ 200. Using an iPad Tablet For Email

Using an iPad Tablet For Email: tablet for pc

The iPad tablet is quite simply the easiest, funnest and coolest way ever to check your emails. It actually makes what is sometimes a boring or frustrating task fun. Yes, seriously..

You see, you get to see, touch and interact with your emails in a way that has just never been possible until now thanks to its interactive 9.7 inch touch screen. It's innovative, looks gorgeous and enables you to see everything in crystal clear, vivid colours and sharpness.

You get the good old classic split screen view with the iPad tablet when viewing your emails in your inbox. And if you want to zoom in on that particular message to see what Aunt Maud is talking about you just rotate your beautiful iPad and voila - there's your email message filling the screen. So simple! Even a child could (and will) do it..

You can quickly traverse through your inbox using your finger and what's more natural than that right? And then you just double tap on the funky screen at any time to zoom in. And yes, if you want to compose a message you just go to the compose a new message button, tap it and a virtually full size keyboard appears on screen awaiting your fingers. Genius. The Apple iPad tablet is totally excellent I can assure you.

Oh yeah - if someone emails you photos through your inbox (apparently people still do this!) then you can view them right there and then on the screen rather than having to download, extract, save them, locate them, open them etc. The iPad tablet boffins have thought of just about everything. But what else do you expect from an Apple product right?:-)

If your boss sends you an email that drives you mad (yes, I know it happens daily) then it's just a simple tap of your finger (preferably your middle one) and the email is swiftly deleted. Tada! You gotta love that.

Oh and if you want to send someone pictures via email yourself using your iPad tablet you can do that as well because the iPad has a built in Photos app which makes this a doddle to do. No more messing around. It saves you time which means you'll have more time to download useless iPad apps and while away those hours on a Friday afternoon in the office!

So yes, I said it - using the iPad tablet for email actually makes emailing fun because it's so easy to do and you have fun doing it. And one day all people will use an iPad to do their email and emailing activities, mark my words.

Product Review: Android MID 7" Tablet PC (an iPad Clone)

Product Review: Android MID 7" Tablet PC (an iPad Clone): mid android tablet

Apple's iPad was surrounded with so much hype before its release. By the time it hit the store shelves, a lot of people went crazy and bought themselves a new one. However, little did we know that somewhere on the other side of the world, a different version of (pretty much) the same device was on the works.

Now, before you get the wrong idea, the Android MID 7" Tablet PC is not an iPad imitation. Instead, it's akin in principle to the Samsung Galaxy, both being tablet PC's running on the Android platform. In this article, let us review the product and see how good (or how bad) it is, when compared to the industry-leading iPad.

Battery Life

Now, the iPad boasts more than eight hours of use without recharging, while the Android MID 7" lasts for less than four. What's more, there have been reports that many units have issues with charging, as the batteries are often defective. Thus, make sure that you are buying from a reputable seller in order to avoid getting a mobile device that is far from mobile.

On-screen Keyboard Sensitivity

One thing I noticed right away is that the on-screen keyboard is not as responsive as I wanted it to be. It takes almost half a second for a character to appear on screen, which translates to at least 2 minutes to write a single tweet. I guess I cannot expect much from a USD 100 device, but I can't help to want for more.

Connectivity

Unlike the iPad, this one does not have a SIM card slot. While many decry the iPad's being iffy about the SIM card size, this one has no SIM capability whatsoever. This becomes a problem or users like me who use SIM-based broadband Internet.

External Keyboard and Pouch

The Android MID 7" Tablet PC has optional accessories, so I decided to get an external keyboard that's installed on a carrying case. One thing I noticed is that the external keyboard has a USB connector, while the tablet PC does not. Because of this, you will still need to use an adapter (comes with the default package) so that the keyboard will work.

Now, the pouch is actually a misnomer. Why? Because the clamps that will hold the device are spaced too far apart. Because of this, the tablet can fall off of the carrying case at any given time, which defeats the purpose of the accessory in the first place.

So what's good about it?

The Price

At less than 100 USD, buying the Android MID 7" Tablet PC should be painless to most people. It can serve as a good training ground for Android OS novices. Why? Because given its price, even if you break it, you won't feel that bad.

Is Google Tablet a Worthy iPad Contender?

Is Google Tablet a Worthy iPad Contender?: android 23 tablet

As the attention surrounding Apple's iPad shifts to the development of the technology and away from the release itself, it is worth considering whether Android-powered tablets are worthy contenders in the space. While Apple iOS can deliver impressive performance on various device sizes, there is room for competitor for an operating system that extends beyond the capabilities of the iPhone-driven system.

Although a number of potential Windows-based tablets have emerged, the technology behind Android offers both developers and consumers a distinct advantage when it comes to identifying better opportunities in the space. To compare the technology behind a potential Google Tablet, it is important to consider how Android can interact with a variety of mobile computing devices.

In fact, Android itself is not limited to just phones and can be viewed as next generating operating system built on Linux. While Google is moving forward with its browser based Chrome OS as well, one can envision a future where the two operating systems merge, since they share a common Linux code base. Similarly, Apple may move to make iOS the next iteration of its Mac OS as the platform matures. While Android and iOS remain nascent technologies, they show potential of emerging as complete platforms for development in the medium term. Given this potential then, how close is the Google tablet to competing with iPad in the near future?

While the exact details of the Google branded tablet are unknown, a number of details on the potential tablet have emerged. Recently, Google has confirmed development of Tabloids through various partners including Dell (with a focus on WiFi) and Verizon (which will be powered by wireless as well as the cellular data network.) A content driven device, the tablet could offer access to the broader Android marketplace, along with content delivery in the form of books, videos and various other media. While Android has a ways to catch up to the Apple Store and iTunes, its recent strategy seems to put it in line with this broader trend. The increasing competition with Apple bodes well for consumers who are seeking better alternatives to the somewhat restrictive iOS.

So, what can we expect from the table that offers advantages over Apple? For one, Android is more developer friendly, opening up a full range of Tablet-based development options for developers on a wide range of devices. One can envision a series of gaming-enhanced tablets with accelerated hardware, focused e-Readers and even cloud-based portable net books which are powered by Google technology. With complete multi-tasking and an active development community, we can expect the various best of Google to power the device, including web-based applications, integrated logins and simplified navigation, even as 3rd party developers explore new opportunities in the space.

Since Google supports Flash as well as a variety of customizations for hardware providers, developers can find a more robust ecosystem for potential development. Whether you are seeking to code a native Android app, a web-based Flash system or content directly onto the device, the potential for Android is much greater than a single form factor tabloid.

Currently, the iPad holds rank at an astounding 96% of all enterprise tablet computer purchases, and Microsoft wants nothing more than to grab some of this very profitable market for itself. iPad tablet PC sales continues to hold top

iPad tablet PC sales continues to hold top :

As an insider of technology, I bet you must have learned that this news that Amazon’s Jeff Bezos announced on September 28 that the Kindle Fire will be released on November 15 and with it we’ve reached “an end to an ecosystem.” In other word, apple’s ipad will meet a new rival. Which one will be the last winner on earth? Let’s have a close look at some details of Kindle Fire and ipad.

Five key features of Kindle Fire:

Connectivity options vary. Kindle Fire is wifi only. iPad 2 offers two options. One wifi only; the other wifi + 3G with data plan access available from AT&T or Verizon.

Video calls are not offered on Kindle Fire, while iPad 2 has FaceTime.

Apps are no contest, as very few will be available for the Kindle Fire at launch.

Though Amazon is using Android technology for the Kindle Fire, they plan to curate their own apps instead of adopting the 225,000 plus currently available for Android. iPad 2 offers over 500,000 apps available via iTunes.

Adobe Flash works on Kindle Fire. A long-standing concern for Apple customers is that Adobe Flash doesn’t work on Apple devices including iPad 2.(extensive reading:transfer ipad 2 to computer)

Accessories are again no contest. Apple offers a wide variety of covers, docks, chargers, etc. for iPad 2. Kindle Fire is likely to catch up quickly on the accessory front, which is both lucrative and just plain fun.

According to foreign media reports, market research firm Gartner recently estimated that in the end of 2011, Apple iPad will achieve a market share of 73.4%, compared with 83% of the end of 2010 the share has declined.

Gartner’s data also show that overall sales of tablet PCs this year will reach 63.6 million units, up 261.4 percent compared with 2010.

While Apple products in the market share decline, but in the next few years it will still rule the Tablet PC market. Gartner research director Carolina Milanesi said the company’s vice predicted Apple in 2014 will maintain a 50% market share. The reason is Apple’s products in terms of hardware, software or service gave the user a good experience, unless the other competitors in these areas to achieve a similar standard, otherwise their threat to Apple is minimal.

Android flat sales in 2011 only 11 million units, Gartner has its Android Tablet PC sales expected to reduce by 28%. In the end of this year, Android’s market share will reach 17.3%, 14.3% more than last year’s increase. But Milanesi is very optimistic about Android’s prospects, she believes that the Android market share was mainly due to lower prices too high, not too strong flat-panel user interface and limited application. Google will soon solve these problems.

From above all, we can draw a safe conclusion that Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet PC is obviously a considerable impact on the market. But in the long run, we can predict that apple’s ipad has some good advantage over it. CultofAndroid Amazon leaked internal data show that the leak up to 250,000 have been booked more than 4,000 customers this flat.

The best part, the 7-inch touchscreen allows a large enough view for anything that you might need to do, without carrying something too with you especially when traveling.

Why Android Tablets Are Going to Be the IPad Killer

Why Android Tablets Are Going to Be the IPad Killer: latest android tablet

We all know about the hype surrounding the Apple iPad, millions of units sold worldwide in the first few days of launch, Apple fans queueing over night to get their hands on one, it's certainly a popular piece of kit. However I think there are better options out there and its all about Android. Lets start with the basics and imagine you don't know what Android is (I'm sure if you're reading this a lot of you do). Android is an open source free operating system owned by Google.

Originally it was planned to be used as a mobile phone OS but it is starting to flex its muscles and expand its horizons. As a mobile OS it is already hugely popular, HTC Sony and many others have adopted it as the system of choice for all their smart phones and here's why. The fact it's open source means they don't have to pay for it, which is obviously a great start but it goes further than that. The fact it's open source means everyone and anyone can develop apps for it, modify it heck they can do whatever the like with it. A huge subculture has grown around Android of developers, modifiers and programmers, all making killer apps that they can put out onto the market with no licensing costs and either distribute for free or make money from. the amount of apps will very soon overtake Apple's App Store for the amount available and it will just keep growing and growing. It's unstoppable.

So what does this have to do with the iPad? well Android is now spreading its wings and many tablet manufacturers are using it on their tablets and most of them can do everything the iPad can and for half the price. OK they are not as slick (yet) but many of these tablets offer features the iPad can't because of it's closed architecture. HDMI ports that output 720p video, meaning they are also portable HD media players, memory card slots so you can easily put data on and take it off, access to the myriad of apps available to Android users and much much more.

At the time of writing this YouTube video shows the very latest tablet, still not released but the demo just shows that these things really are iPad killers check it out here.

Things are developing so quick it's hard to keep up with the new hardware that's coming out. Please keep up to date with our blog. it is regularly updated with news, videos and photos of the latest Android tablets out there

iPad and Android Tablets for 2011

iPad and Android Tablets for 2011: tablet pc 2011

Since Apple launched the iPad back in April 2010, an entire industry has set its eyes on this brand new market of internet touch screen tablets. Aided by its amazing marketing machine, Apple took the world by storm with the iPad, selling a whopping 7.5 million devices over the course of 2010. Competition is never far behind in the consumer electronics industry with tech giants like Samsung, Archos, and HTC preparing their own internet tablets to grab a larger piece of the enormously lucrative market. For this reason, 2011 is set to be an intense year for tablet enthusiasts, a potential year of the tablet as many pundits claim.

The iPad has been successful in captivating the minds and souls of millions of people from around the world. The elegance of its design, the quality of the manufacturing and the refined simplicity so closely associated with Apple have transformed the touch screen tablet into an instant hit. It is estimated that the iPad currently holds a massive 95% of the internet tablet market. In April, Apple is expected to announce the next generation of internet tablets, the iPad2, which will feature many improvements over its predecessors.

Nevertheless, Google, the archenemy of Apple in the mobile world, has pushed hard its Android operating system and turned itself into a competitor that can take on even the mighty iOS. Taking advantage of its open nature (Android is free to license), Samsung created a serious challenger to the iPad: the Galaxy Tab. The Galaxy is a 7" touch screen tablet, hailed for its features such as the dual cameras and Flash support. In 2011, the Galaxy Tab is expected to lead the Android tablets pack and gain a strong foothold in the ever-expanding internet tablet market.

Almost every major consumer electronics manufacturer has announced or is rumored to launch a touch screen tablet in 2011. Most of these will be Android tablets, although some companies such will use their own OS. Among them, RIM is expected to announce an internet tablet called Playbook, and Asus has announced that it will produce Windows-powered devices along with a series of Android tablets.

Motorola has already begun teasing an Android tablet powered by Honeycomb, aka Android 3.0. Rumored to be called the Xoom, the tablet will employ the advanced capabilities of Honeycomb to threaten the virtual monopoly held by Apple on the internet table market.

Asus, the successful Taiwanese netbook manufacturer, will present its line of Android tablets at the 2011 CES, in Las Vegas. The touch screen tablets from Asus will have various form factors and feature cutting edge components, such as an HD screen and a dual-core processor.

Acer, Toshiba, Panasonic, Archos and a slew of smaller manufacturers also have plans to launch their own Android tablets during the 2011 CES. There is a real race to secure a foothold in the touch screen tablet market, a race that will have consequences for years to come.

Android tablets will outshine iPad, eventually

Android tablets will outshine iPad, eventually :

Dell founder and CEO Michael Dell believes Android tablets will eventually overtake Apple's iPad as the dominant force in the slate market, according to an interview published today in The Wall Street Journal.

"Not tomorrow. Not the next day. But again, if you look at 18 months ago, Android phones were like, 'What is that?' And now there are more Android phones than iPhones," Dell said in response to a question on the possibility of Android tablets beating iPad sales. "I don't see any reason why the same won't occur with Android tablets."

Admittedly, Dell has a vested interest in seeing that happen. His company currently offers both 5- and 7-inch Android tablets, known as the Streak.

He also pointed out in the interview that Dell will continue to double down on Android.

Of course, Dell didn't say exactly when the shift might occur in tablet market dominance. Right now, Apple's iPad is easily overshadowing the competition. According to research firm IDC, Apple owned 83 percent of the tablet market last year, and IDC expects the company to control between 70 and 80 percent of the tablet market this year.

That further evidences the trouble Android is having establishing a beachhead in the tablet market. The Motorola Xoom, which launched in late February, has been gathering dust on store shelves. Deutsche Bank said recently that only 100,000 units of the device have been sold so far.

It's a similar story for the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which launched last year.

Samsung said earlier this year that it shipped 2 million units of its tablet worldwide, but it acknowledged in an earnings call with investors in January that the "sell-out wasn't as fast as we expected."

Even so, tablets are catching on in a big way. IDC said earlier this year that it expects 50 million tablets to ship in 2011 alone.

For his part, Dell acknowledged that the uptick in demand for tablets over the past year has been somewhat surprising.

"I'd say [the] rapid rise of the tablet," Dell said in response to the Journal's question on what has surprised him most over the past several years. "I didn't completely see that coming."
