The Samsung Galaxy seven-inch Internet tablet is available from the start with 16 GB of memory that can be upgraded to 32 GB with the addition of a micro SD memory card. It is a direct competitor to Apple's iPad and offers many features that make it a fine value. The Galaxy uses Samsung's proprietary Hummingbird 1 GHz microprocessor as its engine. It also employs Android 2.2 as its operating system. The combination makes more than 200,000 apps available. Since the $ 372 Galaxy does use Android, it opens the wide variety of Google applications to a user. Its functionality is not limited to the Android system because it will also work with any Internet site using Adobe's Flash 10.1.

The Galaxy is compatible with high-speed WiFi standard 802.11 b/g/n. It recognizes public hotspots that are available across the country. It is compatible with GSM-based networking, operating on 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz bands. It is also compatible with GPRS and Edge. Because the WiFi network is growing daily, there are few spots where the Galaxy will not find coverage. This is important because a key feature offered by the Galaxy is its ability to act as a social network hub. This feature, the Samsung Social Hub, recognizes all social networking services, messaging, as well as personal and business email. Its touch-screen technology enables a full QWERTY-like keyboard that will let you touch-type or "slide" keying, using one-finger to quickly enter text.

With a seven-inch diagonal 1024 by 600 pixel display, the Galaxy delivers high-resolution graphics and features excellent text quality. It also offers a USB 2.0 port as well as a docking port for a console through which it offers high-definition HDMI functionality. The Galaxy recognizes the following audio standards MP3, OGG, AAC, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, WMA, FLAC, WAV, MID, AC3, RTTTL/RTX, OTA, i-Melody, SP-MIDI. It also recognizes the following video standards Codec, Mpeg4, H.264, H.263, DivX/XviD Format, 3gp (MP4), wmv (asf), avi (divx), mkv, flv. It makes extensive use of Bluetooth so it will synchronize with other Bluetooth devices such as cellphones and headsets. Indeed, if your laptop is equipped with a Bluetooth interface, it should also be possible to integrate its functionality with you Galaxy.

Samsung's Galaxy integrates much of Google's technology and offers one-touch access to many Google features such as Google Maps and Google Earth. Though there is an upgraded model available, the Samsung Galaxy is an excellent investment. It is also pre-loaded with the Android Kindle app that lets you access and read books in the Amazon Kindle library. There are thousands of book titles available in the Kindle library service that can be downloaded and read for free. The Galaxy also includes the "Slacker Radio" app that allows customization of streaming radio via Internet access. All of this is available in a package that weighs just under a pound and that is less than half-an-inch thick.
